La imaginación al poder

A partir de técnicas combinadas, que incluyen el trabajo con óleo y materiales reciclados de uso cotidiano, el artista plástico italiano Stefano Mancini crea un atractivo universo estético con ecos épicos y románticos medievales y un llamado al disfrute lúdico.

“Todo lo que vemos o parecemos es solamente un sueño dentro de un sueño”, escribió alguna vez, el escritor norteamericano Edgar Allan Poe. Y la frase, logró atravesar las brumas del tiempo y las aguas de un océano, para que un artista plástico italiano, Stefano Mancini, la tuviera como una de sus preferidas, tanto que suele usarla para encabezar justamente su biografía en textos que sirven de guía para quien se haya impactado de muchas formas con su arte. Y es que, conozcamos poco o mucho sobre este pintor italiano nacido en Portoferraio en 1970 y graduado en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Roma, quien haya tenido contacto con su forma de hacer del collage un arte refinado podrá recordar las palabras del poeta norteamericano, pero con una salvedad: poco habrá de ese halo mortuorio típico de Poe en las ensoñadoras imágenes que Mancini hace combinando pintura con adornos de papel y collage de tela. Más bien será la desmesura circense de Fellini, románticas aventuras medievales y una sensación gozosa de infancia lo que atraerá la mirada de todo el que quiera ser parte de una comunicación con su obra que tenga al juego como llave necesaria. Usuario habitual de las redes sociales, las que usa para esparcir su trabajo, Stefano Mancini es dueño de una obra propia que atrae por su clara identidad y la potencia lúdica de su estética.

 - ¿Qué palabras podría utilizar para hablar de su arte?

- Mi mundo estético se compone de personajes de cuentos de hadas, que son luz y color y se mueven en castillos llenos de fantasía. Un mundo hecho de muchos retazos de papel, unidos con el poder expresivo de la pintura al óleo. Las características distintivas de mi pintura son la sencillez y el espíritu lúdico. La sencillez le da una dimensión "mágica" a mis trabajos, gracias al uso de objetos y materiales de uso diario, imágenes recortadas de un libro, fotocopias o recortes de tela. Creo que mi arte es similar aun juego de niños: jugando con objetos cotidianos que se convierten en otra cosa. A diferencia de lo que sucede en el mundo de los niños, sin embargo, creo todo con la conciencia de lo que quiero hacer.

- ¿Puede describir la técnica que utiliza para las imágenes que publica usualmente en Facebook?
- Se centra en los rasgos fundamentales de mi obra y obras. Puedo decir que son esencialmente marcadas por lo pictórico, así como el collage de papeles y trapos. Yo no me considero un artista puro y esa es otra de las características de mi forma de pintar. En realidad todo nace de una narración escénica como la de una escenografía para un cuento, un poema, una pieza teatral o lírica. Mis obras creadas a través de collages de papeles y telas, pintadas y diseñadas, permiten que el observador entre en la caja mágica que es mi propio y fantástico teatro.

- ¿Las redes sociales son útiles para su trabajo artístico?

- Como todos sabemos, Facebook es uno de los sitios web más populares del mundo, con millones de miembros  que la convierten en una herramienta indispensable para aquellos que hacen arte. Y también para confrontarnos con otros colegas de todo el mundo. No hay que menospreciar la plataforma virtual que, sin costo alguno, puede ser una gran manera de darse a conocer. Hoy en día, el matrimonio entre el arte y la Internet es posible. 

- ¿Cuál es el primer recuerdo que tiene sobre el arte, la pintura y las imágenes?

- Desde que era niño siempre he amado la pintura, me gustaba. La pintura para mí era una actividad placentera como un juego. En particular, recuerdo, que solía dejar volar mi imaginación y dibujaba paisajes fantásticos y dirigibles, dibujos que, aún hoy, mi madre guarda celosamente. Así que decidí asistir al Instituto de Arte. Y fue en esa ocasión cuando empecé a conocer la obra de pintores famosos. Recuerdo que fueron Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse y Marc Chagall los primeros que me afectaron con sus figuras, que me parecían tan extrañas, pero al mismo tiempo, tan brillantes e imaginativas. Pero fue Caravaggio, más que otros pintores, que me sorprendió. Este artista  todavía está en mi corazón. Al final del Instituto de Arte, estaba apasionado con el teatro, así que decidí asistir a la facultad de Escenografía en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Roma, fueron años de formación, estudio y experimentación, que aún hoy me recuerdo con entusiasmo.

  

- En la historia de la pintura Italia tiene un gran rol. ¿Cree que haber nacido allí ha sido una gracia para usted?

- Tengo que hacer una introducción a su pregunta, que podría ser una respuesta indirecta. Un artista, no es hijo de un solo padre. Quiero decir que un artista tiene un padre biológico y otros 10 o 15 padres que cada uno de nosotros escoge. Los llamo los maestros, quienes nos formas en nuestro recorrido artístico. Lo bueno es que estos maestros no necesariamente tienen que tener nuestra sangre, nuestra lengua o ser nuestros contemporáneos. Los reconocemos como nuestros padres sólo porque el lenguaje artístico es universal. Italia es el país del arte por excelencia. El país en el que es suficiente para entrar en una iglesia para encontrar una maravillosa obra de arte, donde puedes hallar un pedazo de historia en cada rincón de las ciudades o pueblos. El haber nacido en Italia puede ayudar a convertirse en un artista, pero creo que el arte es algo más profundo, que nace del alma, el arte es la expresión de los sentimientos de quienes lo hacen. Yo soy italiano, pero estoy convencido de que habría sido un artista, incluso si hubiera nacido en los Estados Unidos. El arte africano, por ejemplo, sorprendió a Picasso y de esa experiencia nació el Cubismo. ¿Dónde estaban los límites en el pasado? Para un artista es importante confrontarse con artistas de todo el mundo. Puedo comparar a un artista a un árbol que recibe la linfa continua de todos lados y si esto no sucede el árbol morirá. Un artista siempre debe mantenerse informado sobre todos los otros artistas.

Stefano Mancini nació en Isla de Elba (Elba) en 1970. Al terminar sus estudios primarios, comenzó a estudiar arte, graduándose en Bellas Artes y Artes Aplicadas. Luego asistió a la Academia de Bellas Artes en Roma, donde en 1993 se graduó con honores en  diseño de escenografías, a lo que siguieron cursos que incluyeron clases con Nato Frasca, ScalcoGiorgio y el historiador de arte Roberto Maria Siena. Diseñador de Escenografía y diseño de vestuario, es un artista polifacético que trabaja en  artes figurativas y artes aplicadas. Como ilustrador, ha creado numerosos folletos y carteles publicitarios. Desde 1990 ha desarrollado su expresión artística en la pintura a través de experimentos de materia cromática con adornos de papel y collage de tela. Un mundo hecho de luz y coloridos cuentos de hadas y personajes que se mueven dentro de castillos llenos de fantasía. Con su obra alegórica expone y compara  ópera, obras de teatro, cuentos de hadas e historias, todos representados en clave irónica y juguetona con que lee trabajar sus ideas y fantasías. Vive y trabaja en Castel Madama, entre Tivoli y Roma. Sus obras se muestran en colecciones privadas en Italia y en el extranjero.

- How could you describe your art?

- My painting world is made up of fairy-tale characters, that are light and coloured and move in castles full of fantasy. A world made of so many scraps of paper,  joined by the expressive power of color oil pastel. The distinctive features of my painting are the simplicity and  playful spirit. The simplicity gives a “magical” dimension to my works thanks to the use of objects and materials of daily use, cropped images from a book, photocopies or clippings of cloth. I think that my art is similar to a child’s game: playing with daily objects that become something else.  Unlike what happens in the world of children, however, I create everything with the awareness of what I want to do.

- What is the first remembrance you have about art, painting and images?

- Since I was a child I have always loved painting, I just liked it, painting for me was a pleasant activity like a game. In particular, I remember, that I used to let my imagination fly and draw fantastic landscapes and airships; drawings that, still today, my mother keeps jealously. So I decided to attend the Art Institute. And it was in that occasion that I began to know the work of famous painters. I remember that Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall were the first ones to hit me with their figures that were so strange, but, at the same time, so brilliant and imaginative. But it was Caravaggio, more than the others painters, to amaze me. This artist is still in my heart. At the end of the Art Institute, I was in love with theater and so I decided to attend the faculty of scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, the years in the Academy were years of training, study and experimentation that still today I remember with enthusiasm.

- Can you describe the technique you use for the images you are posting nowadays in facebook?

Focusing on the fundamental traits of my art (works), I can say that they are essentially marked by the pictorial as well as the collage of papers and cloths. I do not consider myself a pure artist and that is another characteristic of my way of painting. In fact everything is born from a scenic narration like the scenography of a story, of a poem, a theatrical or lyrical piece. My works created through collages of papers and cloths, painted and designed, allow the observer to enter the magic box that is my personal and fantasy theatre.

- The social networks are usefull to your artistic work?

As we all know, Facebook is one of the most popular websites in the world, with millions of members and that makes it become an indispensable tool for those who make art and not only, but also to confront oneself with other colleagues from all over the world. Without underestimating that the virtual platform, at no cost, can be a great way to become known. Today, the marriage between art and internet is possible.

- Italy has a big rol in painting history. Do you think that being borned in Italy was a kind of grace for you?

- I have to make an introduction to your question which could be an indirect answer to your question. An artist, is never son of one single father. I mean that an artist has one biological father and other 10-15 “fathers” that each of us choose. I call them TEACHERS, who will form us during our artistic route. The great thing is that these teachers do not necessarily have to have our blood, speak our language or be our contemporaries. We recognize them like our “fathers” just because the artistic language is universal. Italy is the country of Art par excellence. The country where it is sufficient to enter in a church to find a wonderful work of art, where you can find a piece of history in every corner of villages, towns and cities. To be born in Italy can help to become an artist but I believe that ART is something deeper, that is born from  the soul; Art is the expression of the feelings of those who do it. I am Italian but I am convinced that I would have been an artist even if I had been born in the USA. African art, for example, shocked Picasso and from that experience was born Cubism. Where were the boundaries in the past? For an artist it is important to deal with artists from all over the world.  I can compare an artist to a tree that receives lymph continuously from all sides, if this does not happen the tree will die. An artist must constantly keep himself updated about all other artists.

Life

Stefano Mancini was born in Portoferraio (Elba Island) in 1970. On finishing his first schoolings he began to study art, graduating in Fine Arts and Applied Art. He then attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where in 1993 he graduated with honours in set design, which was followed by courses, including those by Nato Frascà, Giorgio Scalco and the art historian Roberto Maria Siena. Theatre set design and costume designer, a multi-faceted artist also involved in figurative arts and applied art. As an illustrator he has created numerous flyers and advertising posters. Since the 1990s he has developed his artistic expression in painting through chromatic material experiments with paper and fabric collage embellishments. A world made of light and colourful fairy-tale characters that move within castles brimming with fantasy. With his work he allegorically proposes and compares lyrical opera, theatrical works, fairy-tales and stories all represented with the ironic and playful key with which he reads and reworks his ideas and fantasies. He works and lives at Castel Madama, between Tivoli and Rome.  His works are shown in private collections in Italy and abroad.
